Lapostolle Winery Santa Cruz, Chile

This year, I joined a wine club instead of a gym. Yep, that’s what I said and I am standing by my choice. Here’s why…

First, I’m (relatively) new in town and I want to meet people.

Most people will advise you to join some sort of club, or association, that centers around something you are interested in, or passionate about, in order to meet others with similar interests.

Pamo Valley Winery holds lots of events, and encourages people to come out and participate. Recently, I attended a ribbon cutting with the Chamber of Commerce and passed out candy to trick or treaters on Main St. I’ve met some new people, who are similarly interested in wine and community, and have had enough interactions that some names were even remembered!

If I had joined a gym, I think my chances of meeting people would be lower. I used to say to prospective taekwon-do students – It doesn’t matter if you join my school, if you don’t come to class. Gyms sell memberships counting on you not to show up. That in itself would make meeting people pretty challenging.

Also, most people don’t really want you interrupting their workout. I know I don’t. Really. I go to workout. I’m sweaty and did not come here for you. In addition to powering my workouts, my earbuds are there to make sure you leave me alone.

Second, and this may be a reach, but drinking wine is good for you. Drinking red wine, in particular and in moderation, has long been thought of as heart healthy. The alcohol and antioxidants may even help prevent heart disease.

Don’t get too excited. I’m not advocating drinking wine over hitting the gym, but moderate alcohol consumption, antioxidants and resveratrol all have proven health benefits. So, wine wins again. I can’t remember the last time I turned down a glass of wine, but it was just yesterday that I skipped my workout.

Third, I like to support local businesses and Pamo is a local winery. Notably, it’s the first “female owned” winery and Jennifer Lane is the first female winemaker in San Diego County. She is often found hosting in the tasting room with her family present.

Lastly, like many who join gyms after New Year’s or purchase fitness equipment from late night infomercials, I may have been slightly intoxicated when I signed up. I only noticed the charge on my credit card bill after the fact. That, along with the brochure in my bag, was how I realized what I had done. Don’t judge.

What are you doing differently this New Year?
